03 / Read it right

Four limits, not one

A trailer under the towing figure can still put the truck over another limit. Each one is the maker’s, for each configuration.

Max towing: The heaviest loaded trailer the maker rates the configuration to pull.
GCWR: The most the loaded truck and loaded trailer may weigh together. Cargo in the truck counts against it too.
Payload: Everything the truck carries: people, cargo, and the trailer’s tongue weight.
Tongue weight: The trailer’s downward push on the hitch. It counts against payload; a common rule of thumb puts it at 10 to 15% of a conventional trailer.

Which pickup tows the most?

Of the US-rated pickups we track, the heavy-duty 2024 Ford Super Duty: up to 30,000 lb, as the Crew Cab 8-ft box F-450 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel 4x2. Among half-ton pickups, the 2026 Ford F-150: 13,500 lb, as the King Ranch and Platinum SuperCrew 6.5-ft box 3.5L EcoBoost V6 4x4 with the Max Tow Axle upgrade. Among midsize pickups, the 2026 Chevrolet Colorado, the 2023 GMC Canyon and the 2026 Jeep Gladiator: 7,700 lb each.

Which SUV tows the most?

Of the US-rated SUVs we track, the 2025 Ford Expedition: 9,600 lb, as the Active, King Ranch and Platinum Expedition (122.5 in wheelbase) 3.5L twin-EcoBoost V6 4x4.

What’s the difference between towing capacity and GCWR?

Towing capacity is the heaviest loaded trailer the maker rates a configuration to pull; GCWR is the most the loaded truck and the loaded trailer may weigh together.

The 2026 Ford F-150, rated to tow 13,500 lb as the King Ranch and Platinum SuperCrew 6.5-ft box 3.5L EcoBoost V6 4x4 with the Max Tow Axle upgrade, has a GCWR of 19,400 lb: with a 13,500 lb trailer behind it, the truck itself, with everyone and everything aboard, may weigh at most 5,900 lb.

Why does one model have so many towing capacities?

Because each configuration is rated on its own: cab, bed, engine, drive, axle ratio and tow packages all move it. The 2026 Ram 2500 runs from 10,530 lb to 20,000 lb across 21 configurations; its towing page lists each one with its document.
