Vehicle comparisons

Two models, side by side: towing and GCWR, payload and GVWR, ground clearance and angles, size, weight, tires and fuel tank. Every figure is the maker’s own, as a range across the model year’s configurations with its document, and the closest matching configurations of the two are set against each other.

Models are only compared within one class and one market, each in the newest model year both have, so a US rating is never set against an Australian one.

01 / 3 matchups

Full-size pickups

The half-ton pickups: F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, Tundra and Sierra 1500, each against the others.

02 / 15 matchups

Midsize pickups

Tacoma, Frontier, Colorado, Canyon, Ranger, Gladiator and the compact Maverick, which buyers cross-shop with them.

03 / 21 matchups

Body-on-frame SUVs

The SUVs built on a separate frame: Bronco, 4Runner, Wrangler, Land Cruiser, GX, Sequoia, Tahoe, Suburban and Expedition. The Defender’s figures are UK-market, so it has no US rival here.

04 / 6 matchups

Australian utes

HiLux, D-Max, Triton and the LandCruiser 70 ute, compared on Australian-market figures in metric units.

05 / 14 matchups

Australian 4x4 wagons

LandCruiser 300, Prado, Patrol, Everest, Pajero Sport and Grenadier, compared on Australian-market figures in metric units. The Jimny is a different size of vehicle and has no honest rival in this list.

06 / How it works

How the comparisons are made

Same class, same market: pickups are compared by size (midsize, full-size, heavy-duty), SUVs with SUVs, and Australian-market utes and wagons with each other in metric units.

Who leads: only a maker’s own figure decides. An estimate, an owners’ report and a third-party figure are shown with their mark and never lead. Each model is judged on its best configuration, so a lead depends on cab, bed, engine, axle and options; where one model has no maker figure, the page says so instead of naming a winner.

Which year: the newest model year both models have figures for, in the generation current then; each page says which generations and years it compares.

Documents last checked . How we read them and what the marks mean: how we source the numbers. A figure doesn’t match its document? Report a wrong number.
