4x4s ranked by the numbers

8 lists rank the 59 models we track by ground clearance, approach and breakover angles, towing and payload: one row per model, its best configuration, each figure from the maker’s own document. The Ford F-150 leads the pickups on ground clearance with 13.1 in; the Ford Super Duty tows the most of the full-size pickups, 30,000 lb.

How the lists work

How do we rank?

One row per model: its newest generation, the newest model year we have that publishes the number (at most 2 years older than its newest), and its best configuration, with any factory package it needs named next to the number. Numbers are ranked as printed, so equal-looking numbers tie.

Only maker documents count: press kits, spec sheets, towing guides and owner’s manuals, each linked from its row. Fleet-only configurations, such as police and special-service trucks, are left out, since a retail buyer can’t order them. Towing and payload compare US ratings only, because makers rate them differently in other markets.

A list is published once 5 vehicles in it have the number: 8 lists qualify today, from the 59 models we track.

Why is a vehicle missing from a ranking?

Its rating may be for another market: “SUVs that tow the most” leaves out the Ford Everest, INEOS Grenadier, Land Rover Defender, Land Rover LR4, Mitsubishi Pajero, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Nissan Patrol, Suzuki Jimny, Toyota Land Cruiser 200/300 and Toyota LandCruiser Prado, because the documents we hold rate them for Australia and the UK, and US ratings are set differently.

Or its maker doesn’t print the number in the documents we hold: “Best breakover angle: every 4x4 we track” names 20 such vehicles under the list (Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, GMC Yukon, Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Patrol, Nissan Xterra, Ram 2500, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Highlander, Toyota HiLux, Toyota Land Cruiser 200/300, Toyota LandCruiser 70, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Tundra) instead of guessing.

Which 4x4 has the most ground clearance?

Among pickups, the 2026 Ford F-150 (Raptor R SuperCrew 5.5-ft 4x4 5.2L Supercharged V8): 13.1 in. Among SUVs, the 2026 Ford Bronco (Raptor 4-door 3.0L 10-speed auto): 13.1 in. Each is the maker’s own figure for that configuration; the same model’s other trims sit lower.
